Rick Joy Desert Works

"The desert’s beauty extends beyond objects and things to an atmosphere of place that is defined by quality of light and other sensory kinds of input."

Rick Joy's "Desert Work" is one of my favorite achitectural project.

He's definitely the contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright. His architecture could be harsh -- however, the desert landscape always emphasizes the lines of his constructions, ofen reflecting the earth and suggesting the sounds of the places the houses are built.

Joy uses a lot of rammed earth and glass, two materials much different, nonetheless definitely complementary.

He studied music, then moved to architecture, and asserts that "the silence in great music is often more profound than the sounds". That's the feeling you get when walking in one of his house.

His house and the desert are an achievement in the entity it creates, and one could barely live on its own without the other.
